Level 1.1 - Forum

Forum Groningen is a cultural centre in the city of Groningen. City residents also call it ‘the living room of the City.’ It houses a library, a cinema, two restaurants, a bar and parts of the Groninger Museum. The Forum is located at the New Market.

Level 1.2 - Grote Markt

The Great Market square is the main area of the city. Here you can find the most renowned bar in Groningen: The Three Sisters (De Drie Gezusters). On Saturdays and other days of the week a market is held here. You can buy flowers, food and even clothes there. During the summer, there is plenty of outdoor seating around the Great Market.

Level 1.3 - Martinitoren

The Martini Tower is the city’s highest tower, and is part of the Martini Church. Residents of Groningen also call the Martini Tower d’Olle Grieze, which means the old grey one. Climb the tower and enjoy the views over the whole city.

Level 1.4 - Vismarkt

The Fish Market is another square close to the Grote Markt. There’s a market (where they obviously sell fish) on several weekdays and on Saturdays. You can get all your groceries, plants and even clothes there. The Fish Market is surrounded by many restaurants and shops.

Level 1.5 - Albert Heijn

The Albert Heijn, or: AH, is the biggest grocery store of the Netherlands. In Groningen city alone, there are 18 Albert Heijn stores. Albert Heijn To Go is great for grabbing a quick snack. These stores are often located near busy areas like the station or in the hospital. Whatever you need: Albert Heijn probably has it.

Level 1.6 - Westerhaven, Museum & Aa-kerk

The area around Westerhaven and the Aa-kerk is considered the oldest area in Groningen. There are many shops and restaurants here. Back in the day, Westerhaven was an important part of the city where potatoes and grains were delivered by boat. That’s why the closest grocery store is called the Korenbeurs – it is where grains were exchanged.

Level 1.7 - Noorderplantsoen

In the summer months the Noorderplantsoen is the backyard of almost every student in Groningen. It doesn’t matter where in the city you live: the Noorderplantsoen is the place to be for a picnic, barbecue or a fun get-together. Every year there’s a free cultural festival called Noorderzon (Northern sun) in the park.

Level 3.2 - RUG University

The RUG (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) is one of the two oldest universities in the Netherlands. With campuses throughout the city, you’re almost never far from college.

Level 4.1 - KULT

Level 4.2 - VERA

VERA is the centre of underground pop culture in Groningen. It used to be a student fraternity, but nowadays it’s a concert venue where many legendary bands played in their early years. U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, to name but a few.

Level 4.3 - Main Bar Area

The main bar area in located in the Poelestraat and the Peperstraat. This is where you’ll find lots of nightclubs, bars and music venues. Did you know that bars in Groningen don’t have an official closing hour? It doesn’t matter what time of the day it is, it’s always time to dance!
