Groningen has always been keen to host leading artists. In 1897, world-renowned French actress Sarah Bernhardt played to a packed theatre in Alexandre Dumas’ ‘La Dame aux Camélias’.
The Bouwmeesters, a famous Dutch theatrical family, also made regular visits to Groningen. Since its reopening in 1984, the Stadsschouwburg has seen many ambitious programmes – most notably theatre, national and international dance, opera and cabaret.
The building was listed as a National Monument in 1994.
