The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG)
The UMCG, which is affiliated with the University of Groningen, offers tertiary care to the northern Netherlands region. Located in the centre of Groningen, it is one of the largest centres for transplant surgery in the world. A wide range of organ transplants are carried out at the UMCG, including transplants of multiple organs in a single operation.
The UMCG buildings are designed on the principle that physical settings can affect a patient’s health. The buildings are also built in accordance with the ‘city within a city’ concept, whereby the outside world is brought in so that patients can continue to take part in society. The hospital’s ‘outside’ amenities include a bookshop, hairdresser, chemist, pharmacy, cafés and a travel agency.
